CBNNews.com - Jesus is back on the big screen. This time, the Messiah is portrayed as a black man.

The movie "Color of the Cross" puts a racism spin on the story of the crucifixion. The film shows an account of the final hours in the life of a "black Messiah" -- and asserts that Jesus Christ was persecuted and crucified because of racism.

Jean Claude Lamarre, who wrote, directed and stars in the low-budget production, says he made the film to dispute the traditional European image of Jesus Christ.

"There is an image out there and who says that it's right. Every indication suggests it's wrong and it's still hanging on walls in churches all around the country black churches and white churches alike, " said LaMarre.

Because of that -- he claims African-Americans have suffered psychological damage, something he says his controversial movie can help heal. During a screening at this afro-centric church in Washington D.C., the thought of a "black Jesus" went over well.

Pastor Willie Wilson of Union Temple Church said, "Jesus was a man of color and that all of the oldest images of Jesus were of a man of color" But many of the movie's critics say it sends the wrong message.

Charlene Israel: Some people are saying that the film is a divisive tool of the devil?
Pastor Wilson: If the images of a white Jesus haven't done that, I don't see why this one should.
Many prominent black leaders have rejected the film -- with some even refusing to show it in their churches because of the racism claim.

To that LaMarre says, "I love black people, and I understand that sometimes the brainwashing can be so strong that the very people you're looking to help sometimes turn against you."
Meanwhile, many who've seen the film say skin color is a non-issue.

"As long as I know what he stood for," said D.C. resident Wade, "and that's what's implanted in my heart… so that's the most important thing. So it really doesn't matter what color he is."

Maryland resident Lana Collier said, "I'm not going to allow someone else's perception and someone else's opinions deter me of what the word says. I pretty much came in grounded…I didn't come in thinking Jesus is that color or this color. I'm going on God's word."
